in the gardens ~ mid april, 2017
April 28, 2017

A month ago in the gardens…

Mid April, 10 days ago, in the gardens…

So much change in 3 weeks.  And now, with garden expansions happening, I need to use a wide lens on the whole garden…

Suddenly, it looks rather small….ahh, perspective is humbling!

I would like to think that my intentional shoveling of the garden, ridding it of 18 inches of snow, helped push our garden season forward, but really…I don’t think it did much, other than boost my own gardening ego.  Within five days of shoveling, the garden was nearly bare anyway.  And all that is popping up…so thrilling, every single year.  It never grows old, this gardening gig.  And while I may grow a little wiser with certain crops and techniques, there is a mountain more of undiscovered knowledge to be, ahem, unearthed.

Garlic is up…lots and lots of garlic…

Like a blank canvas waiting to be painted, we uncovered the other half of our designated garden area to make way for more beds.  This is where I’ve been these last few weeks…so excited to share what we’ve built!

Indigo emerging….and so much dyeing to do with my own farm fresh fibre.

Hardening off some starts on our porch.

The very not pretty winter greenhouse, needing some attention.  I’ve added manure to a few beds, but those weeds are daunting!

Happy hot pepper plants under the lights in the house.

The kitchen garden is officially now a flower garden.  Last fall I put the work into transitioning out the last of the veggies to the Big Garden and put in a new perennial bed at the front.  I like to mulch the pathways every spring with newspaper and straw to keep the weeds at bay.  I am loving (!) this space now which is how you are greeted when you arrive at our home.  Our front door is right beside me and already it brings me such happiness, even thought nothing but the Pasque flower is blooming.

Beside our front door….tulips tulips tulips!

I realize just how much I look forward to the gardening season when the earth is bare and the potential is at hand.  Like these succulents and water, I fill up with the possibilities of what lay ahead in the months to come.  I think it is going to be a good gardening year!
