September 23, 2015

Continuing on with catching up on the last few months of living, loving, and crafting around here…

We never really finished school this last year.  Rather, we petered out.  Our gardens were the fullest we’ve ever had (and most prolific), and that is where we could most often be found.  But there were still some activities to finish up, like riding lessons…

June 2015 - Summer at horse lessons

June 2015 - playing apothecary 2

June 2015 - playing apothecary 1

One of the kid’s favourite games in June was “Apothecary”.  They set up shop in the woodshed with their vast collection of real herbal medicines (only the expired ones) that they make at Herb Club, and created wonderful concoctions.  Then they “sold” them to each other with explicit instructions on dosages.  Herb Club has been a favourite activity for years here for my kids and we are lucky enough in our little village to have a Master Herbalist.

We also started off birthday season in our family with Papa’s big day…

June 2015 - Papa's 43 - 5

June 2015 - first fish

Huckley’s first fish!

June 2015 - soap on a rope 7

wet felting for father’s day gifts and beanbag making for a cousin’s birthday

June 2015 - making beanbags 3

June 2015 - making beanbags 4

June 2015 - banging the drums

June 2015 - rosebud 2

June 2015 - rosebud 8
June 2015 - rosebud 5
One June evening, Papa took the boys fishing and Sunshine and I had a date.  We walked down the lane to pick rosebuds as the sun was setting.  After bringing them home, I set up a hot foot bath for each of us, with a glass of “wine” and snacks, and we strung the rosebuds to hang in her room.  Have you ever strung a bowl full of wild rosebuds?  Ohhhh, the scent is heavenly!  And the sticky resin that coats your fingertips can be scraped off and made into little balls for each end of the chain.  I think this was one of my favourite evenings all summer!

June was a lovely month of finishing up activities so we could relax into the more unstructured rhythm of summer.

This “rewind” thing is such fun!! Thank you so much for doing it. I LOVE the playing “apothecary” activity and that the children are learning about herbs and natural healing–so close to my own heart. Your “date” with Sunshine, stringing rosebuds, and a foot soak–how very sweet and special , she will likely remember it always. You are such a good Mom, I hope you realize that. Love and peace.

You are always so kind to me, Susan. I surely hope my kids remember these memories more than those of the frazzled, tired mama that I seem to think I am. These little snapshots in blogland certainly make me seem a better mama than I deserve to be! 🙂 But I’ll keep your comments close to my heart. Thank you.
