It seems I took a few more photos in July than I had thought…must have been those two birthdays we celebrated back to back early in the month. But more on that tomorrow…our July days were spent first in the garden, then at the beach, and repeat. Our gardens were well tended this summer, despite the nasty mosquitoes that were worse than usual this year…
mid-July
Forrest tending his garden…we spent a lot of time hand watering everything this year
we had lots of different kinds of poppies this year, especially in Huckley’s garden
discovering hidden watermelons!
and cantaloupes!
In other happenings on the homestead, we said farewell to the kid’s favourite sheep, Luna. While she was a Shetland, her fibre wasn’t of the quality I was hoping to keep, so we gave her to my sister’s family just up the road. However, we brought in Stella Blue, a Gotland ewe lamb and Romeo, a Romney ram, to prepare for a few more lambs on the farm next spring! Romeo lives up to his name and is a hit with all of us, and most importantly, with the ewes…
Stella Blue, our new Gotland ewe lamb
Romeo is just like a life-size teddy bear! A gentle boy who loves the ladies already…
And here are two of the ewes who will be ready to breed this season…twin sisters Posey and Flora…
Willy and Heidi are growing…they love to stand on their hind legs and eat leaves off the fruit trees
After the morning round of farm chores (we have layers and meat birds in separate spaces, goats, sheep, and six pigs), we usually headed to the beach…
These July days were mostly filled with these kind of days ~ the ordinary moments of gardening and farming and swimming that elevate our everyday into beloved memories. But there were also many celebratory moments in July…(to be continued)…

Hi Jules,
There is Beauty in all of your pictures!
Your children’s lives are so full of adventures, fun, beauty and curiosity!
I think this makes the happiest childhood!
Glad you’re back!

A breath of fresh air! I agree with the previous comment, your photos are views of a happy childhood, and what could be better than that? I am still just in awe of that garden, every new photo is better than the last. It looks like a gardening magazine, healthy, green and robust.I can certainly see how you had such a busy summer. I can’t wait for the next installment of “rewind”.
Thank you so much, Angelika! I do so hope my kids will remember all of this as their childhood! I certainly am enjoying so much of this!

Thank you, Susan. Like the art of parenting, my gardens are a work in progress. They have come such a long way, but they are still just half the size I’d like them to be. I sure would like to be as sustainable as possible, and with the kids growing, there is more time (and more hands) for getting there. It’s all in the journey, isn’t it?
