deep winter
We are having another good snow year this year. After a frigid December, the new year has been milder along with a crazy amount of snow. So much snow, in fact, that several neighbours have had woodsheds and carports collapse. So much snow that we have considered investing in a snowblower as our snowplow guy is breaking the bank for us (and rightly so…what would we do without his capable machines pushing the snow aside on our steep, long driveway?) We have spent a good deal of time outdoors, making snowmen and snow angels, snow forts and snow mazes.
During the holidays, I knit a pair of Scandiwork slippers for my daughter. These were such fun to knit…quick and not entirely mindless, but just enough focus needed to knit along while watching Netflix in the evening. Kristin has such lovely patterns so pour yourself a cup of tea if you plan on peeking in at her instagram account under the handle scandiwork or on ravelry.
In the meantime, I am working on my Ramona cardigan that I cast on in 2016 and then put aside for holiday knitting. I am using my own Wool Maiden yarn that I dyed in the colourway Nettles with a lighter green for the ribbing. It is so squishy soft and thick and warm…hopefully I will be finished it this week. And adding to my homemade wardrobe, this week I am using some baby whale corduroy to make a skirt and a pair of pants.
With our low carb way of eating, my kids have been missing a good cereal. After nearly three years of this lifestyle, I finally attempted to make a crunchy cereal and it turned out great. Apparently it is supposed to resemble a healthy, sugar-free version of Cocoa Pebble cereal but I’m not sure how close it tastes to the sugary original…I do know my kids love it. You can find the recipe here.
After the holidays, our Christmas tree earned a second life (or maybe that would be a third life) as a bird feeder right outside our kitchen window. We made our own suet birdseed cakes using cookie cutters and our homegrown lard. We had friends over the day we decorated the tree and within an hour there were birdies landing on the branches for tasty nibbles.
Another favourite game right now is to slide off the shed roof onto the piles of snow that the snowplow left behind. I remember doing this as a child and it is some of my favourite memories from wintertime.
With no end in sight to winter as of yet, we are pulling out more handwork projects for everyone to work on after our school lessons are finished for the day. I’ll share more of these soon…for now, I’m off to knit the last several rows on my Ramona cardigan by the fire while the kids play yet another round of Uno.
