July 2016 - Medieval Days 10...

I’ve always felt that I was born in the wrong era.  And after going to our local Medieval Days festival this past weekend, I was reminded of that once again.  Oh!  the music, the smells of fires roasting dinner, the colourful banners flapping in the breeze, the detailed handwork, and the incredible clothing!  I could spend the afternoon alone watching the participants dressed up in their period costumes.  I love that we can be transported into another time and place, even if it is just for a day.

There was something for everyone and we all came away filled up…The boys are re-enacting the battles we cheered on and Sunshine wants to get dyeing yarn…for her doll’s Medieval clothing she is designing.  My husband spent a long time talking with a bow-maker…while he is very crafty and has made his own, a few pointers were welcomed.  And I came home with a Viking knitting needle made of bone after a lesson with a lovely dame.  I didn’t even know there was such a thing as Viking knitting.  Maybe next year I’ll take my spindle and join the women in the handwork tent…though, I may have to get started stitching a medieval frock right now!

This looks awesome!! Viking knitting needles sound pretty cool too. I saw the loom you posted on Facebook. It looks like the one a friends sister posted from her trip to Iceland.(another place I’d love to visit one day) One of my favourite things in the castles in Scotland was watching the woman weaving huge tapestries! The old ones hanging were so beautiful but it was really neat to see them being replicated now.

Hello Shona…I think this loom is a well visited one in Icleand….I love it! And I would love love to go to Scotland and wander around old castles.

ooh we keep intending to go to our medieval faire here and haven’t yet managed to! It’s in May, a tough time of year. Perhaps next year, Ella and I have been discussing the costumes we’d make, and the boys would love to wear their wooden swords I know it!
As you know, I too am born in the wrong era. I think perhaps in a past life, you and I knew one another. 🙂

Ohhh, yes, Melly…we certainly have been connected in the past. And perhaps in the future? 😉 Let’s go to a Faire together! So fun!

I’m not sure what kind of books you like, but I enjoy a lighthearted mystery sometimes. The “Face Down” series was neat b/c it takes place in post-medieval England and the main character is an herbalist woman. 🙂

Oh my! I am also a big fan of medioeval fairs. Here in Italy we have many, some of them conveniently placed in real castles.
There are special groups of people who prepare themselves all the year round for these occasions!
